Timo Werner transfer latest

RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann says he is not considering the possibility of Timo Werner refusing to play for the club in the Champions League ahead of a proposed move to Chelsea.

“It’s not like I read somewhere that I don’t fight for him,” Nagelsmann said.

“He knows how much I like him and what I think of him. That’s why he plays every week and also played when he played half a time weaker than he can.

“That’s confirmation enough. Nevertheless, some things go beyond the coach’s wish. Each player has his own career and life plan.

“The transfer is still not completed, so we don’t need to talk about step two.

“If step one is done, we’ll see how the Champions League continues.”

Timo Werner development

Timo Werner has told RB Leipzig that he does not want to play in the Champions League quarter finals for them.

The Germany striker, whose £53million switch to Chelsea is expected to be announced later this week, only wants to play in Leipzig’s final three Bundesliga matches – and then switch to Stamford Bridge at the end of June.

The news is a blow to Leipzig, who knocked out Tottenham in their run to the quarter finals in March and will find out their quarter-final opponents when the draw is made next month.

The final stages of the tournament are set to be played in August in Lisbon.

But according to sources close to Werner, 24, the decision is his, because he does not want to risk any injury before starting his career with Chelsea.

Tottenham talks

Tottenham are in talks to sign Paris Saint-Germain free agent Thomas Meunier at the end of this season.

Belgian international right back Meunier is out of contract with the French champions at the end of this campaign and is one of several players, including striker Edinson Cavani and fellow defender Thiago Silva, who ahve been made available.

Spurs manager Jose Mourinho has been tracking Meunier, 28, for several months, and has earmarked the Belgian international as one of the men he wants to strengthen his defence.

With Tottenham having little or no money to spend this summer, they are looking for free agents or swap deals as a way of bolstering their squad – but Meunier would add real class.

Chelsea’s Timo Werner announcement

Chelsea have overcome some minor issues and are set to announce Timo Werner’s arrival at Stamford Bridge this week.

The Evening Standard claims everything is now in place for Werner to be unveiled as a Chelsea player.

The Blues will pay Leipzig £53million and the 24-year-old will pen a five-year contract worth £200,000-a-week.

Liverpool were closing in on a move for the Germany international before the coronavirus outbreak affected their summer budget.

That allowed Chelsea to sneak under the radar and get another transfer completed before the window reopens.

Man Utd make Jadon Sancho decision

Manchester United are unwilling to meet Borussia Dortmund’s £100million asking price for Jadon Sancho because they’d rather use that money on multiple players instead.

The Red Devils may end up looking elsewhere this summer, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Leon Bailey emerging as a target, the Daily Mail claim.

United are currently unwilling to pay £100m for the Dortmund star at a time where the coronavirus crisis is still impacting the world.

It’s claimed that United have come to the decision because they’d rather use funds of multiple players, rather than just one marquee deal.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Bailey would represent a cheaper option than Sancho, with the winger valued at about £40m.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang update

Mikel Arteta believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang can be persuaded to extend his contract – provided Arsenal show that they value him and can deliver the Champions League football he craves.

“We have had many discussions with Pierre, his family and his agent and I am pretty positive we can find the right agreement for all parties,” he said.

“It is our responsibility to make him feel that this is the right next step in his career.

“He needs to feel valued. He needs to feel that he belongs to us and we want him, and then he really needs to believe that we can take this club forward the way we want to do.

“He’s going to be a key player to do that and at the moment I’m extremely happy with how he’s been performing and behaving.

“I have a really good relationship with him and we can discuss face to face a lot of things, and so far as I’m aware he is very happy at the club.”
